Safety has always been central to how we work at Key Skills but proving it can often feel like a full-time job. Every major client has their own version of prequalification, and every form asks the same questions in slightly different ways. That duplication adds up to hours of admin, cost, and confusion.

That’s why Tōtika matters. Created by CHASNZ (Construction Health and Safety New Zealand), it’s the national framework that brings clarity and consistency to contractor prequalification. And after months of work behind the scenes, Key Skills is proud to be officially Tōtika accredited.

Earning that accreditation takes real commitment. The process involves demonstrating not only solid systems and documentation, but also the culture and leadership behind them. It’s a thorough review of how safety actually works in practice — not just on paper.

For clients, Tōtika simplifies everything. It means one recognised framework that replaces multiple overlapping assessments. Instead of juggling different compliance requirements for every contract, a single Tōtika accreditation shows that we meet the national benchmark for safety. It’s trusted by major organisations including Kāinga Ora, Downer, Waka Kotahi, NZ Post, and Fletchers, and is fast becoming the industry standard.

For workers, it means confidence that the systems keeping them safe on site have been independently reviewed and verified. And for us, it’s recognition that our ongoing investment in health and safety, from training to leadership to culture, is making a measurable difference.

The Tōtika framework is also designed for continuous improvement, providing feedback that helps accredited businesses strengthen their processes even further. That’s something we’ve always valued at Key Skills – never standing still, always finding ways to do things better.

As the standard continues to roll out across Aotearoa, more clients are expected to make Tōtika accreditation a requirement. For Key Skills, it’s an opportunity to lead by example.

We’re proud to be part of a movement that makes health and safety simpler, fairer, and stronger across the board.
Because when everyone works to the same trusted standard, everyone goes home safe.
